How it works

Notary Live Scan in Three Steps.

The California Secretary of State will not issue your commission until your background check clears. Live Scan sends your fingerprints to the DOJ and FBI for that check.

1

Pass the Exam, Print the Form

After you pass, print the Secretary of State’s own Request for Live Scan Service form. Its agency codes are already filled in.

2

We Come to You

We check your ID and form and scan your fingerprints at your home or office. Most people are done in 10 to 15 minutes.

3

Results Go to the Secretary of State

Your prints go electronically to the DOJ and FBI, and results go straight to the Secretary of State. Keep your copy of the form until your commission arrives.

Keep your commission on track

Notary Live Scan Rules to Know.

These come straight from the California Secretary of State. Getting them right keeps your commission moving.

Exam First

Live Scan comes after you pass the Notary exam. If you have not passed yet, you do not need fingerprints yet.

Within One Year of Your Exam

Your fingerprints must be taken within one year of your exam date, or you have to take the exam again.

Use the Secretary of State Form

Print the Notary version of the Request for Live Scan Service form from the Secretary of State website. It sends your results to the right place.

Every Commission Term

You need a new Live Scan for each four-year commission term, including when you renew.

Keep Your Copy

Your copy of the form proves you paid the processing fee if your prints ever need to be retaken.

No Mailing Needed

You do not mail anything to the Secretary of State. The DOJ sends your results electronically.

Before we arrive

What to Have Ready.

  • Your printed Notary Live Scan form from the Secretary of State website, with your personal details filled in.
  • A current photo ID, such as a driver license, state ID, or passport.
  • Clean, dry hands. Skip lotion the day of your appointment for the clearest prints.
  • A table and a nearby outlet where we can set up our equipment.
